UPDATE: August 2020
In September 2017 Dominica was devastated when category 5+ Hurricane
Maria traversed the entire island. The majority of our housing stock
was either destroyed or damaged and tourism came to an abrupt halt.
Most properties undamaged or successfully repaired were re purposed for
long term rentals. Dominica has recovered well, but just as tourists
were beginning to return, the dreaded Covid19 pandemic brought
worldwide travel to a halt. Dominica has dealt extremely well in
containing the pandemic, with so far only 19 cases reported and no
deaths. On August 7th 2020 our borders were re opened for tourism.
Strict protocols are, however, in place with quarantine facilities and
trace and test teams at the ready. Social distancing has become the
norm and masks must be worn in all stores. For those about to visit,
please visit the government website for Covid19 questionaire and protocol update.
Only a few of the original listing of private rentals remain active.
The remainder have been removed. As others advise us of a return
to business as usual, their listing will be restored below.

at an elevated location with limited sea view. Lounge with balcony on 2 sides has cable TV,
telephone to receive all calls but with outgoing
calls restricted to local, wifi internet, stand fans. Separate
dining area and fully equipped kitchen with large fridge,
stove, microwave and under counter washer/dryer. 3 bedrooms and 2
bathrooms with shower, not en-suite. Bedrooms 1 and 2 have double bed,
bedroom 3 has 2 single beds. Insect screens to opening
windows, nets over all beds if required. The village is well
serviced with grocery stores and snackets. A
five minute drive from Salisbury
beach, where fish may be bought from
local fishermen and scuba diving can be
arranged with the East Carib Dive Club -
you may relax at their beach bar and
daytime restaurant, Chez La Doudou.
Other nearby restaurants at West
Central, Tamarind Tree, Stonedge &
Sunset Bay. Vehicle hire is recommended.
Secure parking available - a 5 minute
drive from the main coast road
(Portsmouth 35 min., Roseau 35 min.,
Melville Hall Airport 1 hour, Canefield
Airport 25 min.). A good central
location, convenient for exploring the
entire island - nearby attractions
include beaches at Macoucherie,
Mero and
Batalie. Good for
snorkelling below cliffs between
Macoucherie and Salisbury beaches.
Macoucherie Valley is very scenic and
there are many spots along the river
suitable for bathing. A little further
afield are the Layou River and Wacky
Rollers (adventure park and river
tubing), Morne Diablotin National Park,
Syndicate Forest Trail, Indian River
& Cabrits National Park.

NEAR TO MID EAST COAST
BANANA LAMA COTTAGES
Location:
Newfoundland Estate, bordering Cacao River, 2 miles inland from
Rosalie, mid east coast.
Brief Description:
Andy (sea captain and engineer) and Melissa (architect and
chef) have sailed the world whilst captaining the boats of others. On
visiting Dominica, it was not a difficult decision
for them to make to relocate
and call Dominica their permanent home. Having purchased 3 acres of
what was previously a banana farm in one of the most idyllic parts of
the island, they set about building their home in the most ecologically
friendly way possible. First they built a 1 bedroom cottage in which
they have lived whilst building their main home. Both are powered by
solar panels and their drinking water is piped from a natural spring on
the property. Since completing their main house, the original cottage along with two new ones are available for short term
rental. What makes this venue
so special is the tranquil
location, crystal clear river in which to bathe and the beautifully
spacious and well tended garden, decorated with flowering shrubs, an
array of colourful flowers, organically grown fruit and veg. The
Lounge/Dining/Kitchen area is open plan and due to the privacy of the
location opens onto the rear garden below. The bedroom area, however,
may be made secure. Downstream
is the farmer from whom they purchased, immediate neighbours upstream
are an American couple who recently completed their home and beyond
that is nothing but unspoilt primordial rainforest rising up to the
Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which can be reached by various
hiking trails. WiFi internet is available along with 110V outlets for
those with North American appliances. Although the kitchen is fully
equipped and has a barbecue, it may be possible to share some meals
prepared by your hosts, for which there will be a charge.
Please note
that Hurricane Maria destroyed two bridges on the access route to
Banana Lama. Zip lines have been installed to facilitate crossing the
Rosalie River.
Vehicle hire
recommended at this location - Charles Douglas (formerly Melville Hall)
Airport 1 hour, Roseau 50 minutes, Rosalie Bay 10 minutes.
We can pre-arrange for a rental vehicle to be
awaiting you at the airport or the Roseau Ferry Terminal on your
arrival in Dominica.
Natural
attractions easily reachable by road - Carib Territory, Emerald Pool,
Morne Trois Pitons hiking trail from Pont Casse, Rosalie Bay where
turtles nest, SariSari Falls hike from Laplaine, Victoria Falls hike
from Delices.
Banana Lama is Covid certified for those requiring self quarantine.
